Beatle's death sparks memories for comedy duo

Imagine living out this version of a hard day's night.

Tough acts to follow don't get any tougher than Feb. 9, 1964, when Marty Allen & Steve Rossi, a hit comedy team during the 1960s, followed the Beatles in their U.S. TV debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on CBS.

"It was pandemonium," said Rossi, recalling what still remains one of the most-watched single TV shows of all time. "First, we had to get through 20,000 screaming girls to get to the stage door."

"I've never seen anything like it in all my years of show business," said Allen, who turns 79 in March.

The death of Beatles' lead guitarist George Harrison on Thursday sparked memories for the longtime Las Vegas residents, who were booked on Sullivan's show with the Fab Four on three occasions -- all in 1964.

When the Beatles brought down the house, Allen knew it was going to be a challenge to get the young audience's attention.

"I had the presence of mind to know the only way we could get the kids on our side was to join them," said Allen.

When the comedians walked on stage, the teen-age fans made it loud and clear they wanted the Beatles back.

"There was no commercial break and we couldn't even hear Sullivan it was so loud," said Rossi.

His bushy-haired sidekick walked to the front of the stage and said, "Hello dere kids, I'm Ringo Starr's mother." With that icebreaker, Allen ran into the crowd, working the kids, as Rossi sang, "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

"Marty won 'em over," said Rossi.

The comedians weren't so lucky the next time, at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach, when they again followed the Beatles on the Sullivan show.

"Sullivan told me to sing 'Granada,' " recalled Rossi. "The crowd started booing and chanting 'We want the Beatles, we want the Beatles.'

"I got booed for 3 1/2 minutes ... most embarrassing moment of my life," he said.

Backing up George

Not many people got a personal serenade from George Harrison.
