THE $1.98 BEAUTY SHOW

Chuck Barris (of "Gong Show" fame) produced this mockery of the American beauty pageant with a format of six contestants to vie for the crown. Host Rip Taylor introduced a variety of contestant-types -- some sexy, some gross.

There was a talent competition, with plenty of off-key singers and off-beat acts and a swimsuit competition, which, curiously, always seemed to favor the fat contestants.

The winner received $1.98 and a tacky crown. Frequent celebrity panelists included Jaye P. Morgan, Jamie Farr, Louis Nye, Marty Allen, and The Unknown Comic (Murray Langston).

Main Game: Six contestants (Women most of the time) compete in a spoofed beauty show where they are judged on their talents and in the swimsuit competition. The talent portion could produce just about anything. So did the swimsuit competition. In the end, Rip Taylor opens up the envelope and announces the winner. That winner gets the grand prize: $1.98 (One dollar and ninety-eight cents). Oh, and at the end of it all, Rip Taylor sings his song for the winner.
